South Seattle is a group of neighborhoods traditionally east of I-5 and south of the Central District, extending to the Renton city limits. Columbia City, Rainier Beach, Seward Park, Mount Baker, and Beacon Hill are just a few. Some include unincorporated King County neighborhoods Skyway and Bryn Mawr, however they are not within the city limits of Seattle.
South Seattle neighborhoods have traditionally been diverse with a mix of African American, Asian, Caucasian and Latino communities. It is currently going through a period of redevelopment and gentrification as people have been priced out of other neighborhoods in Seattle. The Link Light Rail system was completed through the area to connect Seattle to the airport and has also contributed to interest and renewal. Proximity to Seattle is another reason for gained popularity, as commute times to both the inner city and airport are short.
Parks and recreation are plentiful. Many beautiful parks exist with lovely views, beaches and trails. From boat launches, off-leash dog parks, skate parks, city-owned golf courses, wading and swimming pools, choices are endless. Several parks of note include Jefferson Park with its expansive views and many activities including lawn bowling, and of course the golf course made famous by Fred Couples. Gennesse Park has 2 acres of off-leash dog area, as well as a special Small and Shy Dog area and a doggie drinking fountain. Seward Park, a 300 acre peninsula has many outstanding beaches, picnic areas and trails and is the turn-around point for the Seattle Marathon. There are multiple boat launch points and even an amphitheatre, Audubon Center and art studio.
